Beach tug-of-war is a classic outdoor activity enjoyed by families, friends and co-workers alike. It serves as a great team building activity and fun way to spend some time in the sun. The basic concept involves two competing teams pulling opposite ends of a rope, attempting to move it a certain distance against their opponents' resistance.
Hawaiian Cultural Context
The activity has Hawaiian roots - it's traditionally called "Huki Kala" and is featured at events like the Duke's Challenge at Hilton Hawaiian Village.
How to Play
Here's how to set up your own beach tug-of-war:
- Dig a hole near the shoreline (water in the bottom is acceptable)
- Line each team up single-file on either side of the hole
- Each team grabs their end of the rope
- On the signal, both teams pull!
Younger children may need an adult "anchor" for support to ensure fair and safe competition.
