Jellyfish are transparent, tentacled marine creatures that deliver an irritating sting. The box jellyfish commonly appears near Hawaiian shores, typically appearing 8-12 days after a full moon cycle.
Timing and Location
South facing beaches in Hawaii are most often impacted by jellyfish eight days after a full moon and they can persist for up to three days. Affected Oahu beaches may include Waikiki, Ala Moana Beach Park, Hanauma Bay, and the Waianae Coast. Warning signs are usually posted during heavy jellyfish invasions.
Prevention and Response
Before Entering the Water
Check with lifeguards about jellyfish presence and scan the sand for washed-up specimens.
If Stung
Avoid scratching the affected area. Rinse with ocean water or freshwater. Seek immediate emergency assistance if you experience allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.
