Waikiki Beach Safety - Follow Beach Signs

Beach safety is essential when enjoying Waikiki. Visitors should pay close attention to posted warning signs, which alert swimmers to dangerous conditions. Some signs are permanent fixtures, while others are posted daily depending on current ocean circumstances.

Common Hazard Warnings

Jellyfish

Box Jellyfish regularly swarm to Hawaii's south and leeward shores 9 to 10 days after the full moon. Symptoms include stinging, burning, and redness. Severe reactions may cause breathing difficulties.

High Surf

Large, powerful waves can be generated by distant storms. Uncertain swimmers should avoid entering the ocean during high surf warnings.

Portuguese Man-O-War

These creatures appear most frequently during strong onshore winds. Stings cause burning and redness; immediate medical attention may be necessary for severe reactions.

Shark Sightings

Lifeguards post these signs when sightings are confirmed. The water should be avoided in marked areas, and any encounters should be reported immediately.

Sharp Coral

Most Hawaiian beaches feature sharp coral reefs near shore. Foot protection is recommended, and deep cuts require medical attention to prevent infection.

Strong Currents

These swift water channels can be dangerous. Swim diagonally across the current, not against it when caught.

The Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division of Honolulu provides these descriptions to help beachgoers stay safe.
